11 Point Educational Plan

This is how Delta’s dynamic 11 point educational plan leads towards attaining a legal qualification:

  1. Delta Education offers the opportunity for structured education as well as "un-schooling"

Delta Education's products and services make provision for the family that prefers a structured, prescribed and formal approach to education, as well as so-called "un-schooling", being families that prefer to follow their own informal structure without prescription.

The thoughts of newcomers to the world of homeschooling are still guided by the formal structures of government and private schools. These newcomers usually prefer a service provider that supports them with year plans, formal lesson plans, tests, exams and report cards.

This formal structure offers newcomers with a much needed footing in home-schooling. After a year or two, they become more adjusted to homeschooling and their need shifts to a less prescriptive education and the need of the educational process to adapt to the family's needs and wants - in other words the family prefers to be free to decide on the study material, year plan, time-tables and evaluation.

Delta Education offers lesson plans, study guides, parent-/ facilitator guides, DVD's, yea plans, time-tables, examinations, certificates and report cards to those that require this type of support, while Delta Educations study material may also be purchased as loose subjects to fit within the plans of families doing "un-schooling".

It is strongly recommended that parents with learners in grades 10, 11 and 12 make use of a formal structure to obtain legal report cards for grades 10 and 11, which are an absolutely essential prerequisite for admission to the NSC.

  2. Work at your own time and pace with Delta Education's term system

Every academic year (grade 0 to 11) is divided into 4 terms. The terms are completed at your own time and pace. There are no time-limitations. As soon as the study material of a term is completed and the necessary preparations have been done, the applicable term's examination may be requested, when available and written at home, when. You may mark the tests and exams yourself, with the aid of memoranda supplied by Delta Education. Delta Education will assist in the marking of papers by the subject authors when papers are presented within the marking slots as indicated on the year program.  When papers are presented for marking out of these slots the marking will be delayed to the next marking slot.

Grade 12 learners are however subject to a more formal structure, where the learners are expected to complete most of their work by the end of the second term, to be ready and prepared for the record examination and finishing school.

  3. The study material

Delta Education creates modern lessons that keep up with the latest curriculum
       requirements, educational trends and developments.
    -  These lessons are composed to be child-friendly to entice learners to experiment with the
       study material themselves.
    -  It substitutes the experienced teacher in the home school and serves as a powerful aid to
       teachers as well as parents.
    -  Lessons are developed to attain the educational objectives of Delta Education.
    -  These lessons are ingeniously and methodically set out and bound in Delta Education's study
       guides.

For more information, please call Delta Education's friendly client liaisons centre.

  4. Save time and effort with parent-/ facilitator guides!

Study guides are accompanied by parent- or facilitator guides. These guides lead the facilitator step-by-step to convey the contents to the child. This relieves the parent/ facilitator from all the red tape since ready-made lesson plans, tests, examinations, memorandums and source materials are included in the parent/ facilitator guides. Parents regard the parent/ facilitator guide as an essential aid as it alleviates their task and saves time.

  6. Are prescribed books, computer programs and equipment included in the package?

Delta strives to include everything necessary for a learner to achieve success in his/ her educational career. The exception to this rule is that parents and centres are responsible to purchase computer programs for Information Technology, drawing boards, as well as equipment for experiments in physical science, etc. at additional cost.  Delta Education will, at your written request, provide you with the information regarding the vendors from where these items can be purchased.

  7.  Examination, evaluation and portfolio assignments

    -  Delta Education provides learners with the opportunity to obtain sought after qualifications.
A qualification is the certificate the learner must work for to further his/ her studies or to
obtain a job.  A qualification such as the NSC is obtained by the learner passing a final
examination and building up a year mark.  The final examination normally counts for 75% and
the year mark 25%.  To collect the year marks and to prepare for the final examination,
learners can use Delta's lesson material, which is stretched over four terms.  Every two
terms is concluded by a full examination.  The fourth term's examination also serves as the
final examination for the year.  During this examination the work of the first, second, third and
fourth terms is finally tested.  This examination normally counts for 75% of the final rapport or
       qualification mark.
    -  All the exams from grade 1 to grade 11, as well as the grade 12 preliminary examination is
written at home under supervision of the parent.
    -  The grade 12's preliminary examination is written at home and the final examination is written at
       the appointed OAER examination centres.
    -  Besides examinations, learners write term tests at the end of term 1 and 3 (included in the
parent-/ facilitator guides), complete activities at the end of each lesson and undertake specific
projects/ assignments, clearly explained in the parent-/ facilitator guides. The work is
accumulated in neat portfolios (files) and kept on record by the parent for inspection if
       necessary.
    -  The parents/ facilitators of Grade 4 to 8 learners have the full right to decide in which way the
assessment should occur. Delta Education does recommend that learners should engage in and
successfully complete all open book tests, projects, term tests and examinations (assessment
tools), but it remains the prerogative of the parent/ facilitator whether they want to make use of
any, some or all of the assessment tools. Delta Education can adapt its report card system to the
decisions/ preferences of the parent. Should a learner be fast and fervent and needs to be
challenged, the full spectrum of assessment tools should be applied. Should a learner have
difficulty with the work, the pace is to heavy, have a problem with reading, etc., the parent/
facilitator may focus on some assessment tools only and spend more time to master the work.
It is absolutely compulsory for all grade 9 to 12 learners to successfully complete all tests,
examinations, assignments and projects, albeit at their own time and pace, before they will be
considered for promotion to the next grade or for admission to the National Senior Certificate
       (NSC).
Tertiary institutions as well as employers increasingly require grade 11 and 12 learners applying
for further studies or bursaries or an occupation, to present their portfolios as proof of their true
       academic progress, experience and skill.
    -  The examinations of term two and four will be marked by the subject Authors of Delta if returned
within the window period for marking. An evaluation report (report card) will be issued by Delta
on request of the parents. If your child finishes the examination late, you may request the
memorandums at an additional fee and mark the examinations yourself. You may send the marks
to Delta's examination department who will then send you a conditional report on your request.

  8. Support services

Delta Education strives to provide reliable and friendly service. Parents want to receive their work, tests, examinations, report cards etc. correctly, complete and timely. To reach this goal, Delta has an experienced client service centre, and an administrative and financial team, equipped with computerised administration, report and financial system on Pastel.

Delta boasts an educational corps responsible for writing and composing lesson material. The educational corps or subject authors act as subject advisors who evaluate learners' work and assist with advice where parents run short of expertise and skill. You may approach subject authors for extra classes and negotiate an additional fee with them.

  9. Congresses, finishing- and winter schools

Delta Education offers regional congresses in Gauteng, Western-Cape and Namibia every second year, where the parents are informed on a diversity of aspects concerning home-schooling, while they have the opportunity to meet other parents, and get to know each other more closely. During these congresses children and subject authors also meet each other in person.

The subject authors use the opportunity to evaluate the learners' work, to work in a group with the learners, handle difficult aspects of subjects, prepare learners for examination etc. The subject authors also offer support and council parents where necessary.

Winter schools usually occur during the July holidays. The main emphasis lies on Mathematics, Physical Science, Accountancy, Languages and practical of technical subjects. The course fees of the winter school and finishing school are included, but transport, meals and accommodation costs, additional subject related equipment and materials are excluded.

Lessons on video and DVD: We put the teacher in your home.

Some subjects are more difficult to master than others. The clarification of key concepts in the more difficult subjects has been recorded on DVD by some subject authors.
